Intent
At Broadway Junior School we believe that a high quality and enjoyable physical education programme is a vital part of a child’s development. We aim to develop each child’s physical confidence and skills enabling them to lead healthy lifestyles. Through the curriculum we offer the children opportunities to compete both against themselves and others, in order to build self- confidence, resilience and a sense of fair-play. The curriculum is designed to enable all children to participate including those who are more able, as well as those with additional needs. The P.E. and Sports premium has been used and will continue be used to promote and develop these aims, as well as support teaching and support staff in their continuous professional development.
Implementation
At Broadway Junior School we teach children life skills that will positively impact on their future. Every child in the school accesses swimming lessons on a termly basis to increase their confidence in the water and also to enable them to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.
We aim to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to participate in physical activities. These opportunities are supplemented by extra-curricular activities and by participation in competitions against other schools under the Sunderland Schools Games umbrella which include sports such as Tag Rugby, Kwik Cricket, Tri Golf, Athletics and Tennis. These competitions allow children to put skills from PE lessons and extra-Curricular clubs into practise, allow them to experience a range of new sports and, with the emphasis on participation, encourage ‘reluctant’ children to get involved.
At Broadway we aim to engage all pupils in regular physical activity. The Chief Medical Officer guidelines recommend that all children and young people aged 5 to 18 engage in at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day, of which 30 minutes should be in school. To help implement this and to supplement PE lessons being taught in curriculum time, the school has introduced, on a daily basis, the ‘Golden Mile’ which encourages all children (and staff) to take part in running a mile a day in the safety of the school grounds.
We aim to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others, as part of a team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values. To help implement this, every child in the school is given the opportunity once a year to embark on a residential visit with year 3 and 4 children visiting Broomley Grange and the children in year 5 and 6 visiting Derwent Hill in the Lake District. Both venues help the children to develop, not only their independence but teach the value and importance of cooperation and collaboration, as part of a team, as skills that will benefit them for life.
Impact
Our curriculum aims to improve the wellbeing and fitness of all children at Broadway Junior School, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes. Within our lessons, children are taught about self-discipline and that to be successful you need to take ownership and responsibility of their own health and fitness. Our impact is therefore to motivate children to utilise these underpinning skills in an independent and effective way in order to live happy and healthy lives.
