Art

Intent

Through regular art lessons and cross curricular links, it is our intent that all children, inclusive of SEN and disadvantaged pupils, are exposed to a range of opportunities that allow them to develop their knowledge and understanding of art and learn to:

  •          Find enjoyment in art and creativity.
  •          Hold a positive self-image and confidence.
  •          Discover a sense of purpose and fulfilment in artistic expression.
  •          Appreciate a wide range of artists and art works.
  •          Experiment with a range of media.
  •          Use a range of materials and techniques competently.
  •          Develop their observation and description skills.
  •          Express ideas and feelings through creative work and in both two and three dimensions.
  •          Value and respect their work and the work of others.
  •          Discuss their work using appropriate vocabulary.
  •          Use observation skills to heighten perceptions.
  •          Enhance cultural understanding.
  •          Use art to find fulfilment and achieve personal wellbeing throughout life.

Implementation

Art at Broadway Junior School is an integral part of the school curriculum that is embedded into all subject areas and has a positive impact on children’s learning and development. Art is delivered as weekly one-hour lessons, for half of each term.

The National Curriculum is followed and pupils are taught:

  •          to develop their techniques, including their control and use of material, with creativity, experimentation and an increasing awareness of different kinds of art, craft and design
  •          to create sketch books to record their observations and use them to review and revisit ideas
  •          to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials
  •          about great artists, architects and designers in history.

Impact

Pupils should be engaged, inspired and challenged by art and have the confidence to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. Pupils should leave Broadway with the ability to think critically and with an increased understanding of art and design. They should know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
